I had my first draft of the season last night and boy was it a doozy. About a month ago a fellow trader at my new shop approached me asking if I’d like to join the office’s fantasy football league. Now I have a rule about fantasy sports that my oldest readers know all too well: I don’t like playing in multiple leagues. In my opinion, it is too hard to find just one league that is chock full of people who actually play fantasy sports, to go around jumping in other leagues. I try to stick to just one league per season, which happens to be the one I’ve run for over a decade now (way back to the days of recording stats out of the newspaper). My league, my true league, consists of 16 guys that eat, live, and dream about fantasy sports. If I’m looking for more, I push the guys to up the entry fee and winnings. One of my biggest pet peeves about having multiple leagues, is that you end up with different teams. This leaves you often in the precarious position of having to root both for and against a player. That’s garbage.
About two years ago, my wife (the Lady Thief) decided she wanted out of public leagues and began running a league herself. I joined for obvious reasons. Playing two teams isn’t ideal, but I was able to reason it by drafting and trading to make both teams have as many of the same starters as I can. Fast forward to a month ago and said fellow trader inviting me into the office league.
Look I don’t walk around with a Fantasy Sports Thief T-Shirt on or anything. Moreover, when I start a new job, I don’t exactly tell everyone about my blog or my addiction hobby of fantasy sports. So obviously, this guy had no idea what he was doing. He mentioned that the league of 12 has been around for a good six years and one member was leaving, thus opening up a spot for me. I couldn’t help myself. I see guys like him and leagues like this coming from a mile away. It’s like I’m a 16 year old fat chick staring at a big box of chocolates having just swore myself to be on a diet: OK I’ll eat just ONE more.
So the setup is 12 teams, four divisions, pretty standard scoring. It’s run on CBS Sports which instantly reinforces the noobishness of the group. Worst part is, it’s a snake draft. Listen, for those of you still running a snake draft, change it. Snakes are stupid. More on that in a future post.
So the draft was last night. We all met in person (I invited them to hold it at my place) to do it. I haven’t had a chance to mock yet this year, new job + blog hinders that, so I was happy that this draft was going to be held before my two upcoming auctions (lady thief league next week, my league the week after). Again, I never ‘informed’ these guys that I knew a lick about fantasy sports. The one moment where I think they started to smell the shark in the water was when Lady Thief, god bless her, walked in the room during the 11th round and talked me into drafting a defense (thanks again hon!) before retreating to the other room to jump into a mock draft (her third one that day). At that moment, they noticed something was amiss.
Below, I’ll go through the rounds, my picks, the other picks that stood out, and any insights I gleaned. But one thing I want to stress before we get into it. Last night I noticed something novel with respect to drafts that I think we all tend to suffer from. I think we all look at drafts and picks as a ‘me vs. you’ type of event. That is, when someone grabs a guy I want, I don’t think of that person in particular, I just think HE got my guy. When another one is taken, I don’t think ‘oh there goes another one’, I think ‘Damnit! HE did it to me again!’. It’s only after the draft that you realize these players never go to the same team, they go to various different teams. In draft, your mind can begin to warp into thinking just HE got those guys and it places pressure on you. This pressure is the source of draft mistakes.
I also noticed what the antidote to this problem is, aside from now actually recognizing. It’s the same thing I’ve been harping on since Thief Nation was born: Game planning. Creating a road map for your draft will ensure that you don’t lose focus, that other picks don’t rattle you off your game. Even if you make a bad pick, your road map will instantly bring you back on track. OK, let’s get to the good stuff!
Round One: this is gonna make you laugh, but I actually scored the #1 overall pick. I know, I know, it’s just not fair. I can honestly tell you, and anyone around will back this up, I never hesitated for one second on that pick, I took Adrian Peterson aka Automatic Paydirt. I stick to my guns and do what I believe and I believe he is the most proven fantasy football scorer out there. End of message.
Since it was the first round, I can’t say there were any particularly ‘good’ picks, but there were several terrible ones. DeAngelo Williams 8th overall, brutal. But it gets worse, Rodgers 10, Manning 11, and SCHAUB 12th!. Only the top 6 RB’s came off the board, plus DeAngeBrutalPick, the QB quartet (including Brees at 6) and Andre Johnson. Safe to say I was happy after round one.
Round Two: Is it Christmas? Must be, because Rashard Mendenhall fell to me at the 24th pick. Shockingly awesome. That’s easily the best 1-2 punch in the league. I’ve no idea why he fell this far, stupidity I guess. I’d say this was the best pick of the round, but it wasn’t. Randy Moss went 21st overall. Yeah I was REALLY hoping he’d fall to me, but if Mendenhall is the consolation prize, I’ll take it.
There weren’t any brutal picks in this round as it mostly went chalk, however Brady and Romo came off the board meaning 6 QB’s were now gone. In my mind at this point, it’s a short list to Flacco. My game plan was RB, RB, WR, WR, RB, QB. With 6 QB’s down, I began to get a wee concerned.
Round Three: I had a choice here with the first pick in rd 3. Larry Fitzgerald or Brandon Marshall. Those following me on twitter caught this dilemna I faced. I had just downgraded Larry Fitz the previous day, and that day had watched the replay of Matt LeinBrutal missing every receiver on the field. Then there’s the injury… My board had Fitz higher but barely. I went Marshall. I think I made the right call. The rest of the round three picks went pretty much chalk, with another QB (Rivers) coming off the board. Really? Philip Rivers in round three. Whatever, my list to Flacco gets shorter.
Round Four: This was a no brainer. Last pick in the round and I snag Ocho Cinco. A bona fide WR1 as my WR2 in the fourth round. Inked. I’m now sporting one hell of a quad.
This round is where things started to get hairy too. Michael Crabtree comes off the board, Steve Giants Smith comes off the board, and some of the lesser known RB’s (Addai, Spiller, Best) come off the board. I was hoping one of these guys would’ve slidden to me, but whatever. No QB’s come off the board, but I’m lookin at a list with guys crossed off and Joe Flacco is staring back at me.
Round Five: My gameplan says grab a RB. It’s telling me that Flacco, Palmer, even Hasslebeck or Favre or McBadd will be around and they’ll be fine. It says ‘TAKE CLINTON PORTIS’, a guy I’ve been toutin from day one who’s done nothing but reinforce my beliefs. Then my head chimes in: what if there’s a run on QB’s this round? Portis should fall another round. My head won, and I draft Joe Flacco.
I think this was too early. The line between Flacco and Palmer blurs more and more every day. QB is VERY deep this year, RB is not and this league starts QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, FLEX, meaning I needed a third back. Instead, in a brief moment, I tried to out think the game planning I’ve been doing for weeks now. I tried to get ‘cute’ and ‘hope’ for one player to fall. I kept thinking HE took all those QB’s early, HE might do it again. This was my one error in the draft.
The end of the round saw the two pathetic picks of the lot. Ahmad Bradshaw and Caddillac Williams, picked before guys like Brandon Jacobs and Clinton Portis. Those two players could’ve been had at least two rounds later.
Round Six: I’m watching the picks like a varsity football player peering into the girls locker room. Wouldn’t ya know it, three picks before me, HE grabs Clinton Portis. Ouch! Now in my head I’m furious. But as the round moves and it gets back to me I say ‘stick to the gameplan’. It’s an error, but just pretend you took what you needed and hope to make a trade down the road to get what you had wanted. Worst part was, only Brett Favre came off the board for QB’s. I didn’t need to jump the gun.
Listen to me Balla’s. QB is DEEP this year, TE is DEEP this year, WR is ok, RB is VERY SHALLOW. Your first 5-6 rounds should be all RB/WR. For auction, just chill back and snag one on the cheap.
Worst pick of the round: Hakeem Nicks. To a team with no QB yet either, and before Jacobs or Portis comes off the board. Pathetic, but his team name is the ‘Never Nudes’ so at least he’s got that going for him. Another terrible pick, Robert Meachem. Really? In round six?! Terrible.
With the last pick of the round I grab Jerome Harrison. Fortuitous that he was still around. He should be a bonafide RB3. Not the guy I wanted (Portis) but a decent consolation prize. Harrison has a lot of upside and was awesome at the end of last season.
Round Seven: I lead off and it’s a no brainer – Carson Palmer. I hate myself right now. Flacco could’ve fallen to this round if Palmer did. I know I’ve got two QB’s now, but I’ve filled out my other skill starters and I’m already thinking trades.
Best pick of the round, another guy I hated missing, was Michael Bush. He’s poised to really be stellar in Oakland and is great value for round seven.
Round Eight: Braylon Edwards. Just a steal here. He’s my backup wideout and he’s a hell of a lot better than Hakeem Nicks. I wanted Santana Moss here, but HE snagged him in front of me. Braylon is good enough.
Round Nine: With much of the guys I was interested in off the board, I went TE and grabbed Owen Daniels. This is one of those low risk, high reward picks. He supposedly has a clean bill of health, and when healthy, he’s awesome.
Round Ten: Just as I’m mouthing the words Devin Thomas, I hear ‘WHO?’ out of the mouth of Lady Thief. She realizes the brews are starting to get to my head – SPECIAL THANKS TO READER WILL O’BRIEN for donating that beer for me last night! – and she decides to intervene. ‘You need a defense, there isn’t any value elsewhere except defense’. God bless this woman. I’m arguing San Francisco, she’s telling me ‘Think of Jared Allen and all those sacks’. We pick the Vikings.
Round Eleven: Lady Thief and I watch as Thomas Jones comes off the board. ‘WHAT?! You let Thomas Jones slide for Devin fricken Thomas!’ Oops, Jones is really poised for another sleeper year, and I completely missed him being around. She grabs the RB list and calmly tells me we need to make sure there aren’t any other solid backs left. ‘Mike Bell, you need to take Mike Bell. McCoy is not a full time back and Bell will get the goalline carries. Ink it’. I inked Mike Bell.
The rest of the draft was meaningless. Chambers, Fred Taylor, Britt (great late draft grab!) and a kicker. The kicker kills me as Hasslebeck is sitting on my waiver wire now. I planned on grabbing him but was told I muct draft every starting position. Now I’m left hoping to grab Hasslebeck off the waiver wire, then move Palmer or Flacco for an upgraded RB.
If you haven’t caught the theme of this post yet – let me be clear here – wait on a QB. There’s no need to jump. The top 6 look to be going early, which leaves us to scoop up all the top backs and wideouts we need. The other theme is to have a solid gameplan and when HE knocks you off it, you get right back on and follow through. Oh, and if that fails, it helps to have a wife that really knows her stuff!
Final Roster:
QB: Flacco Backup: Palmer
RB: Peterson / Mendenahll / Harrison
WR: Marshall / Ocho Cinco backup: Braylon
TE: Owen Daniels
DEF: Vikings
K: Who the hell cares from Dallas
Bench: Chambers, Bell, Taylor, Thomas
