Whoa! Back to back days of posts! I made myself a promise that I’d start posting when I get home from work before I allowed myself to be sucked into the ever addicting world of Madden 2011. Seriously, you know it’s bad when your wife starts putting on her facebook status that she’s become a ‘Madden Widow’. But honey, don’t you see that this is research I’m doing for the betterment of Thief Nation?! HA! Yeah right.
Alright let’s start off with a recap of drafting strategies for football. I know I’ve been neglecting baseball lately here, but truth be told there’s just not much more to write about. We got playoffs a couple weeks out and it’s cruise control time. Sure, some are fighting (like me!) for a playoff spot (no one in my league has clinched a berth yet), but still there’s little strategizing we can do with a largely bare waiver wire and the trade deadline passed. Time to focus on football, make sure we’re all ready for upcoming drafts. To those of you who’ve already drafted, sorry I wasn’t more vocal about this sooner. But, a word of advice, you’re drafting too early. Particularly in football, players get injured too often in preseason games/practices and it’s just not fair for someone to start the season with a key player done for the year. Two weeks out from game one is the max for me when it comes to drafting. I’m in 3 leagues this year (I know, way too many, but I added a cream puff work league which should take minimal effort) and they all draft within 2 weeks of the first game.
Draft strategy. Look over the rankings I’ve posted so far and something should jump out at you, value. Undoubtedly the most value comes from the top 6 running backs, the top 5 wideouts, and Drew Brees. These are the 12 players with rank scores north of 10. These are the TD kings. If you’re sitting in a snake draft, these are your top 12 picks hands down. If you play in a league that scores 6 points for a passing TD, add Rodgers and Manning into this group, and add 2 rank points to each of the 3 QB’s scores. Past them the difference gets diffused to insignificance.
Sticking with snake draft strategy for a moment, let’s talk the first five rounds, and let’s talk 3rd overall pick vs. 10th overall pick. It looks like this: round one 3rd pick MJD (cause he’ll fall to you), 10th pick we’re talking Randy Contract Year Moss (cause he’ll fall to you too). Round two: 10th pick grabs a RB (think Mendenhall or Greene) whilst 3 grabs either a Wideout in the range of Austin/Ocho, or grabs Tom Brady if he’s still on the board. Round three: 3rd pick coming back grabs a RB no doubt, best one available. 10th pick does the same, best available. Now you’ve each got your workhorses (RB’s) squared away, plus either an elite WR or an elite QB. Fourth round: if you don’t have a QB, now is the time to grab a Flacco or Palmer. If you do have a QB, it’s WR time. 5th round: if you play in a 3 RB league, go RB here. If you play in a 2 RB, 3 WR league, go WR here. If you play in a flex league, take the best available and given two of equal rank score, take the RB.
That’s it. Straight forward and simple. From there, do not focus on filling up the TE or DEF or K slots until round 9-10. Instead, add depth to your skill position slots. RB’s, QB’s, WR’s, stock up on em, best value is best. I promise you, you’ll be happy you let other guys go after the Dallas Clark / Antonio Gates and we’ll grab this years Jermichael Finley / Visanthe Shiancoe on the cheap. Got it?
Ok, now for the group of readers not living in 1975, and thus playing an auction draft. By the way, have I sufficiently gone off about how much better an auction draft is lately? No? How’s this then, my wife (Lady Thief herself) runs a league and in it she mandates an auction draft. If the ladies can handle it fellas, I hope you can too. But more importantly, and particularly for football, and particularly for the bigger (12+ teams) leagues, snakes give a HUGE advantage to the guys with early picks. We can quantify this for you right now. Add up the rank scores of the first two rounds spelled out above: pick 3 has a total of 27ish to 22ish. That 5 points is equal to the difference made by a guy like Greg Jennings. It’s like he gets Greg Jennings as a whole extra player than you, simply because he gets to pick earlier. It never evens out because the impact of players after the first two rounds drops off significantly and evens out. Convinced yet? Here’s one more: it’s a hell of a lot more fun. Nuff Said.
OK, to my auction drafting bro’s. You probably all the know the drill by now, but let’s recap to be sure. We’re looking to pay up for talent, and grab as much from the top as we can. I think using my leagues 2009-10 draft is a good benchmark, so think Peterson and CJ going somewhere around $60-$70 (I got AP at $62, I’d have paid more). I think CJ will have too hefty of a premium to justify his worth this season, so move on. Ideally, we look like this: Peterson ($60), Shonn Greene ($40), Randy Moss ($40), Miles Austin ($30), Flacco/Palmer ($20), and save the last $15 to spend on the rest of your staff. Spend no more than 1$ on your TE, your DEF and your K. The other $12 goes towards depth and that’s a third WR or RB at $5-8 and the rest are $1 picks. This all assumes a $200 pot, and a standard roster. This is what I’m looking to do this year. I’m fully aware that I’m posting this on my website and my opponents will use it against me. I don’t care, bring it on. If I don’t get Greene for $40 cause you bid me up, I’ll go after another similar back whilst you overpay for Greene
Finally, let’s talk about the WR ranks Maddenized and tagentially, my hatred for Eli Manning and Jay Cutler as you all have pointed out so eloquently. First Cutler. Take a look at what John Madden is telling you about his targets this year. In a league where Carson Palmer is throwing to three wideouts with Madden ranks of 91, 83, 83, you want me to rank Cutler next to him where his wideouts are ranked 78, 75, 70. Need I say more? On to Eli, aside from the largely overrated Steve Smith, he’s also throwing to junk. (88, 81, 76). 13th overall for QB’s is right where Eli and this rag tag crew belongs. He has no red zone target WR and you know they will never throw the ball when inside the 10 due to the beast Jacobs. Got me?
So, take a glance below and let’s here it. I’ll add in the RB ranks probably on Monday as I’m flying out tomorrow for a weekend in Florida. My assumption is that there’ll be less movement in the RB ranks after they are Maddenized and updated for the preseason play simply because they’ve all looked as billed in the preseason. Though one thing I promise that will surprise you is how much more Madden likes Portis over Big Bad Larry and Willie Parker.
Back to the wideouts below. Some things that jumped out at me are: Miles Austin lower than I would’ve guessed, while Sidney Rice and Roddy White are higher than I thought. Donald Driver gets as much respect as Greg Jennings and Marques Colston?! Santonio Holmes is the Jets best receiver, the Bengals have the best receiving corps since the 1980′s Oilers, and if there’s a team that stuns this season, it should be the Chiefs (great rb’s, great wr’s, great coach).
Enjoy! Hope you find this stuff helpful!
