The 2010 Fantasy Football Season in Review thumbnail

While doing some research for this post, I spent time surfing the net looking for information on Arian Foster. Was there any way we could have seen this guy coming, any clues that might’ve helped our draft boards? That’s when I stumbled on a Houston Texans Fans message board, and one post in particular, that summed up the entire 2010 Fantasy Football season for me.

While away I received word (god bless Twitter) about a huge three team trade in the NBA involving the Magic, the Wizards and the Suns. I quickly tried to scrawl down my thoughts into a few tweets, and was pretty shocked that more analysts didn’t. In my view, this was a fantasy relevant deal, offering a huge opportunity that shouldn’t be overlooked. Here’s my formal analysis…

By now, all of you are familiar with my first, and best, free tool: The Fantasy Basketball Team Analyzer. I’m proud to announce that a little over one year after the start of this site, and almost exactly one year after I developed the tool, I’m able to offer it to you via web app. What follows is, verbatim, the ‘How To’ that I will post in conjunction with the tool…

If you seek out the advice of most fantasy basketball analysts out there on Dwight Howard, the general response you will get is: ‘He’s top notch for Head to Head leagues, but terrible for Roto leagues. A quick glance at his ‘per game’ ranking via Yahoo shows him to currently sit at 141st on the season. Meanwhile, ESPN ranks him a little bit better at 39th overall (also on a per game basis). However no matter how much I try to ‘massage’ the numbers, I can’t get this guy out of the top 10. I like to refer to this phenomenon as ‘The Dwight Howard Conundrum’ and here’s some insight into why it occurs…

When I was a quant working on valuing stocks, we had one specific factor in our model called ‘The Magic Factor’. Essentially it was unique to our group (no one on the street used it) and it was based on oft overlooked information, yet helped accurately predict results. For fantasy basketball, I’ve discovered my own magic factor. This special stat is not included by most rankings systems, is an accurate predictor of future fantasy performance, and is very reliable and consistent from year to year. Have I peaked your interest?

This post highlights three key players that are currently sitting in buy low territory. The first is Lebron James, who’s suffered immensely from intense media scrutiny and incessant boos on the court. The second is Carmelo Anthony who’s been uncharacteristically inaccurate with his shot of late. Finally, we have Andrea Bargnani who’s new role as the leader of the Raptors hasn’t fully translated into better fantasy production, yet.

Let The Fantasy Football Playoffs Begin thumbnail

It’s playoff time for fantasy football leagues, and that means it’s time to game plan. While much of what happens in the coming weeks will be out of your control, there’s one position that is in your control: defense. I’ve gone through the teams likely to be available on your waiver wire and picked out the top choices to own for streaming during those important weeks. Remember, you want to own as many as you can because it’s not just about the defense you have, but also the defense your opponent doesn’t have.

There’s nothing worse in the world of fantasy sports than the dreaded Veto. A veto option should be used solely to thwart collusion, however all too often managers use it to thwart progress. To stop one or both teams from getting better. It’s time to put a stop to this nonsense, and here’s how…

The Pairs Trade

The Pairs Trade thumbnail

In the world of stock trading, we have something called a pairs trade. The basis for a pairs trade is to go long one stock and short another one, where you feel the two are very similar except that one is currently overvalued and the other is undervalued. Instead of trying to gain just based on whether or not the one you buy goes up or the one you sell goes down, this trade is centered on playing the spread between the two and betting that it diverges. Today’s top sell high reccomendation is just such a pairs trade where I’ll compare the sell high player to another and discuss why you should look to make the deal.
